This is what packing is like when you have cats Dante . . .

“Boxes? Yay! I’m going to nom the box flaps!”

“Plant? Yay! I’m going to nom the plant. Why you yelling?”

“Why do you keep trying to put stuff in my kitty fort? See me rolling around in your box. Aren’t I cute?”

“If I didn’t have to climb your tower of boxes to nom the plant, I wouldn’t be knocking stuff down.”

“Wow, that looks heavy. Let me lie down exactly where you plan to put that. Why you yelling?”

“You’re going to move that big bookcase all by yourself? I help! I’ll sit on the shelf. Whee!”

“Whatcha doing? Hide-and-Seek? Are we playing a game? GOTCHA! Why you yelling? Ew, don’t bleed on me.”

“That looks fragile. I’ll lie on it and keep it safe.”

“How did I got on top of the TV? Uh . . . don’t know, actually.”

“I’m exhausted after all that hard work. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.”

I think Dante had intended to watch me tie back my hair when he jumped onto the bathroom vanity. He sat patiently, waiting for an ear scratch. Then he saw the daddy long legs in the sink. This new creature captivated Dante’s simple mind. He lowered his face close to it to get a better look.

The daddy long legs appeared enchanted by Dante’s long, white eyebrow whiskers. As the hairs brushed past the arachnid, it climbed aboard and embraced them.

Dante sat up, surprised. He looked at me with a pitiful expression. Picture a face full of confusion with a daddy long legs dangling in one eye, intertwined amorously in the cat’s eyebrow whiskers. Dante blinked. Help, Mama.

“I don’t even know what to do with that,” I said.

I'm cute, but I have no idea what's going on.

Transformation to Cat Lady Complete

Last night’s email to the Captain (who is still away for another week and a half) -

It is nearly 9pm. The house is quiet. A woman gets up from the couch and stretches. She then drops gently to the floor and begins cooing at the two cats lounging uncomfortably in the heat.

“Who’s my pretty girl?” the woman says while stroking the small black cat.

She turns to the large tuxedo cat. “Where’s your tummy?” she asks. He stares with a blank expression.

“Where’s your tummy?” she asks again. He continues the vacant and confused gaze.

She tenderly pokes his belly. “Is this your tummy?” Suddenly understanding, he rolls over and exposes his belly for a tummy rub.

When the tummy has been sufficiently rubbed, she announces that it is bedtime. Locked in her room, she wishes for more meaningful conversation than this.

I’ve had great fun putting pictures of my fur babies in the rotating photo frame, but now I realize that I don’t have any recent shots of either of them. Future improvements, I guess.

Fetching

I’ve had many cats in my life. After all those years of feline companionship, I’ve come to expect certain behaviors of my pets. For example, if I, say, throw a ball for my cat, I’d expect it to:

Ignore me.
Give me an expression that says “Why are you throwing shit, stupid?”
Chase the ball, play with it for a minute, and then lay down, bored.
Chase the ball, roll it under the fridge, and look at me like “Now what?”
Chase the ball, look at it, then look at me waiting for something exciting to happen.
