Fitness Friday: Inaugural Edition

If you’ve been a reader for awhile, you are probably aware of my love/hate relationship with exercise. For years now I’ve been trying to become a healthier me. Somehow I always fall far short of attaining any sort of measurable results. Maybe because I cheat. A lot. (Being near the weights room is apparently not the same thing as lifting weights. Who knew?)

It occurred to me recently (when I wrote this post) that my blog can be a powerful tool to keep me on track. Once I post a promise to myself, it’s there for everyone to see. It’s real. Instant accountability!

So beginning today, on Fridays I will post three small, attainable fitness goals that I must attempt to accomplish in the subsequent seven days. This week’s baby steps to a kick ass body are:

1. I will exercise for at least thirty minutes three or more times in the next week.

2. By next Friday I will be able to do five regulation push ups. Without crying.

3. I will stretch until I’m loose enough to bend over and touch my toes every day next week.

If you’ve been trying to motivate yourself to get in shape as well, you can participate in Fitness Fridays too. Just come up with your own three goals based on what you think you can achieve in a week. Post them on your blog. Then let me know so I can drop by and offer words of encouragement!

This is exactly why I’m afraid to use my blog for exercise goodness. Sure I’ve mentioned things a bit here and there, but nothing committal about it. I know how powerful the blog could be and with how many of my readers have become fanatical about working out lately, I know they’d hold me to it.

    Oh dear God, no.
    But yay! for you!
I am allergic to exercise. I do it from time to time, when I feel like it, but overall… no. :)

I can’t wait to read about your progress every Friday! Those sound like great goals :)

I think I may join you on your journey!!!! I’m going to have to take this first week off still because I’m recuperating from my foot surgery. However, by next Friday I should be able to post some fitness goals of my own and we can encourage each other! Hooray for Fitness Fridays…great idea!

Kevin, at least you are exercising and making great progress on that mileage!

Sybil, if you don’t want to exercise, you can play the role of taskmaster to make sure I don’t slack off.

kilax, I won’t be running any half-marathons anytime soon, but you’ve got to start somewhere.

jewelz, yay! The best part about Fitness Fridays is that everyone’s goals are totally personalized to their own level of comfort and motivation. I actually got the idea from yoga! (Which turns out to be awesome, by the way.)

I can bend over and touch my toes, but those push-ups? Would likely end in me with a broken nose.

I SUCK at push ups. My goal is five? I can do maybe two. On a good day. I guess I’d better get practicing!
